Since 2016 is the year of the mule, this is the perfect time to share the detail of this tangy cocktail. Introduced 75 years ago, the Moscow Mule has reawakened to become a popular cocktail once again today. This is actually the cocktail that started it all! With the vodka boom in the US. the invention of this beverage was pure capitalism. When John G. Martin, president of a company called Heublein Inc. and Jack Morgan, a bar owner who was also responsible for Cock’n’Bull products, met in the New York Chatham hotel, they were discussing their dismal experiences of selling Vodka and Ginger beer in the US. And then suddenly “boom” – the idea was born, what about the combination of two unsuccessful products which could be the hit of a new promotion campaign?
The ice was ordered, and a few minutes later glasses were raised and the first attempt at this legendary drink, consisting of Premium Vodka, Ginger beer and lime juice was made. It was really refreshing and tasty. Spirits rose and after four or five cocktails the mixture was perfected and christened the ‘Moscow Mule.’
There was probably someone else at that table that night who couldn’t sell cobbler mugs.
So the cobbler mug became the signature container for serving this new drink. Martin went around the country promoting the Moscow Mule together with Vodka and his Ginger beer. He asked bartenders to pose with a cobbler mug and a bottle of vodka. Two pictures were usually taken with his Polaroid camera. One was left at the bar for display and the second one was taken for the collection and proof for the next bar along the way.
The drink was extremely popular in Los Angeles among Hollywood stars. There was no known celebrity who wouldn’t enjoy the Moscow Mule at some point in the Cock’n’Bull bar. From casino owners to authors, everyone was hooked on this new trend.
Nowadays pouring the Moscow Mule into something other than a cobbler mug is like eating sushi without chopsticks.
Fill a cocktail shaker three-quarters full of ice, combine Pristine Premium Vodka and lime juice and shake about 15 seconds until chilled. Strain into a cobbler mug, filled with crushed ice. Top it off with ginger beer and garnish with a wedge of lime.
The research of that time showed that only 7,000 out of 14,000 New Yorkers preferred to feel taste of alcohol in their mixed drinks. So maybe the great invention was just a prepared plan and market research consequence. No one knows for sure, but what can be better than pure ingredients mixed in cocktails. And what can be better for the Moscow Mule than Pristine Premium Vodka?
